What you should know (9)

Breakfast is the most import ant meal during the day. It gives you energy and nutrition’s for the major part of the day.

Do you always eat breakfast? If not, you are likely to suffer obesity. Without breakfast we can perform our duties well, but we feel very hungry about noon. Your organism is on alert due to lack of sugar, so you eat a  chocolate bar or a cake. When you return home, you have late lunch and supper right before you go to bed; next morning you do not feel like having breakfast at all... In this way your organism gets accustomed to many calories and sugar at a time – the effect is that stores fat.

Breakfast  not only provides energy at the initial part of the day, but stimulates to action and improves concentration. It should include as much as  40% of calories intake  in the entire day diet [1]. How you should plan it?

Typically breakfast means a sandwich or porridge and milk. But a better meal and more nutritious can be composed. Bread and milk are not  necessary components of every breakfast. We can get rid of this habit and invent and experiment with something new.

The cost of tetanus vaccine is 19 grosz (grosz = 1/100 polish zloty), against TB – 31, and polio – 41. With so little money, the lives of many children can be saved.

In the West obligatory vaccinations against most dangerous diseases are an obvious fact. Thanks to them many dangerous diseases are no longer present there. Nevertheless, every fifth child throughout the world is threatened  because they do not get three vaccines DI TE PER.

In the Third World, the UNICEF is responsible for vaccination of children. It operates programs for vaccination of children in Syria, Congo and Sierra Leone; every third child worldwide gets vaccines thanks to the  UNICEF [1].

In Poland, ca. 9 million tons of food is wasted every year. Throughout the  world –  1,3 billion tons. Otherwise, all  population in the world would not suffer hunger and malnutrition.

In 2010, 925 million people through the world suffered malnutrition. But  every year we waste 1,3 billion tons of food – one third of global food. As much as 222 million ton of food is wasted in the industrialized countries. This is percentage that can be compared to  production  of food in Sub-Saharan Africa (230 million ton) [1].

Typically we think that joy comes to us from the outside as an effect of  positive events in our life. And because joyful moments are so scarce, we tend to think that we have no reason to be happy. It is a mistake  – joy of life depends on joy and you can learn it!

We often think that to be happy we need some things: more money, better job, travel thought the world, etc. We concentrate on these dreams and making them come true – or, alternatively, on complaining… This way we become permanently unsatisfied and frustrated. Scholarly research proves that objective improvement of our life (especially with respect to material situation) do not necessarily enhance our satisfaction from life. When we have achieved what we have dreamed about, it turns out that we are not happier. We want more and more in order to keep and save the same level of happiness [1].

... people are unhappy because of one thing: they cannot keep and stay calm and in silence.

Blaise Pascal, Thoughts [1]

Contemporary people are afraid of silence. We are accustomed to excessive stimuli, and life in noise does not seem to disturb us. But we deprive ourselves of access to the best source of power and inner calm.

The noise level with which we live today is so high that people living  100 year ago simply could not have imagined. Moreover, noise becomes more intensive every year. In big cities, noise during day time is on  the level of 70-80 decibels (dB) [2]. Every second Pole lives in more noise than  norms allow, i.e.,  60 dB per day and 50 at night [3]. Gradually we get accustomed to noise, since no other possibility exists.   And when we go for a trip to the country, the silence at night turns out to be disturbing – it often does prevent a sleep.

In 2005,  49% of the world’s population inhabited cities; in Poland ca. 61%. Concrete space and fumes are our reality now and we get accustomed to breathing  polluted air. We can see the difference only when we go to a park or forest. It is of extreme importance for the mankind to care for plants and clean air and to stay outdoors as often as possible .

Pamiętajcie o ogrodach   Remember about gardens

Przecież stamtąd przyszliście

W żar epoki użyczą wam chłodu

Tylko drzewa, tylko liście

Pamiętajcie o ogrodach

Czy tak trudno być poetą

W żar epoki nie użyczy wam chłodu

Żaden schron, żaden beton [1]

The lyrics of classic song by Jonasz Kofta  and Jan Pietrzak express our longing for gardens, parks, green squares –  enclaves of coolness and rest within cities. We feel better with plants around us – in gardens, parks, forests –than in the vicinity of concrete or steel buildings. Scientists emphasize that exercise in the open air, at best in forests or parks, is healthier than exercise in the  gymnastic hall. Why? Mostly because plants improve the quality of the air we breathe - its structure and ionization.

In the majority of diet and feeding systems the emphasis is on the selection of foods. But the Diet of Five Changes is exceptional: the point is not what we eat, but the sequence in which we add individual ingredients during preparation of dishes and when we eat.

The theory of Five Changes is part of a  traditional Chinese  medicine that dates back to a few thousand years. The basis of it is the concept of the so-called five elements (xing). They are: wood, fire, earth, metal and water– also known from feng shui, an art of  harmonious  planning of space. Xing Has many meanings: it is translated as  „elements”, but also as „phases”; the basic part of it is its dynamic character. Therefore, not only elements as such count here, but their transformations. The most important  rule is the principle of movement  which governs the cyclical changes, as well as mutual overlapping of all the parts of the Universe. In effect of this principle is in particular the fact that phenomenon in Nature repeat  – e.g. the sequence of seasons in the year. Spring, summer, fall and winter correspond to the following transformations: wood, fire, earth, metal and water.

Movement  and exercise is the fundament of health. It is better than any diet and prevents many civilization diseases. Why do we undertake it so reluctantly?

We know that the mind can influence the body – while  the way we think, take life and reach to stress determines the level of our endurance and staying healthy. But one can say just the opposite  – the body can exert influence on the mind. A man is an  psycho-physical entity, therefore our psychic well-being depends on our  diet and way of life.

Apart from a well-balanced  diet, the basis of health is an active way of life. We seem to know about it, but we do not care. The reason is that more exercise means  a serious change in our everyday life routine. Exercise is particularly important for those of us who spend a lot of time behind the desk – now the major part of our population. We spend a lot of time not only at work, but we also stare in a computer screen; sit in the car, and watch TV in the evening. Thus, we find no time whatsoever for physical exercise.

Water, so common in the Nature – seemingly unimportant, in fact is indispensible. Not only people but also all other forms of life on the earth depend on it. That is why the quality of drinking water is so crucial.

Water is a source of life at least in two meanings: First, evolution started in water environment and continued here for a long time. Second,  all mammals begin life in fetal waters.

Water has been intriguing for people for ages. One of the latest proofs of this interest is a controversial film „Water – a big mystery” [1] – an evidence of  fascination of scientists as well as religious leaders. As we now know,  water  may hide a number of secrets that are yet unrecognized in the contemporary science. What is even more surprising, an interest in this unique substance enables a dialogue between scientists and a clergy of many large religions. Symbolic senses of water as the source of the world and its beginning, possibly are not that far from what scientists say about it  [2]
